Pakistan’s full cooperation to China over Beijing Olympics as Musharraf visits China
“Pakistan firmly opposes any attempt to politicize the Beijing Olympic games and any actions to disrupt the event,” Musharraf has told Chinese President Hu Jintao during his current trip to China. He also described Tibet as an “inalienable part” of China and has expressed his opposition over any attempts to split the country.
It is to be noted that the Olympic torch will pass through the Pakistani capital of Islamabad on 16 April. Prime Minister Gilani has described the passing of the torch as an “historical” event and has issued instructions to ensure it’s safe passage. Islamabad is one of the 22 cities across the world where the Olympic torch has been scheduled to pass.
Ensuring the recognition of the Chinese position over Tibet is within the strategic, security and economic interests of Pakistan. China is the only major super power to have positively contributed to the development of Pakistan in a committed fashion. The relationship involves less of a “carrot and stick” approach and has proven over the decades to be mutually beneficial. To ensure regional stability in the region is within the interests of Pakistan which itself is going through a critical junction.

I hope not.
Yes it does appear to send out the wrong signal to the outside world but Pakistan must act within national and regional interest.
In fact it sends out a different picture to the world – a different side to the Tibet story. I feel many of those protesting for the Tibet cause are doing it out of an earnest gesture of human compassion – but there are also many who have just got on the ‘lets-bash-China’ due to all sorts of rationale and non-rationale reasons.
THERE IS another side to the Tibet story. Tibet has been made into a celebrity cause with everyone and their cat getting involved – it is simply turned ridiculous.
Also I may even be on the brink of hypocrisy by highlighting Kashmir and turning on Tibet. Its a complex conundrum. I would be interested to know what foreign policy you would advocate for Pakistan in its dealings with China and India?
